Team Nathaniel was created to honor the life and legacy of 9 year old Nathaniel Contreras. Just three weeks shy of his 6th birthday, Nathaniel was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, bone cancer, and so his journey began. Having spread from his knee to his lungs to his brain, after 3 ½ years of battling this terrible disease, Nathaniel’s body lost its battle against cancer. His passing devastated the many people who loved him, and those whose lives he touched along the way. Throughout Nathaniel’s journey, his family learned the sad truth that there are not enough medications to help children win the fight against cancer. Trials can be costly, and the funding for trial medications prevents hospitals and doctors from being able to find a cure. We also learned the huge financial burden placed on families when their loved ones are diagnosed with cancer. After Nathaniel passed in 2015 at the age of 9, we knew we had to finish his fight. Cancer may have taken his body, but his spirit lives on. Team Nathaniel became an official non-profit in 2017. We fundraise throughout the year so that we can provide financial assistance to families who are struggling to pay their day to day expenses, including medication, rent/mortgage, utilities, gas, etc.

Another important thing we do to honor Nathaniel’s life is work with local hospitals to provide pediatric oncology patients with a free Lego to build during their visits or treatments.  Nathaniel’s favorite pastime during treatment and hospital stays was building Lego’s. Some of his favorite builds included all Minecraft, Lego Movie, Metal Bear’s Sea Cow and the Avengers.  His favorite superheroes were Iron Man and Batman. We know he would have loved the idea of bringing a smile to each child’s face when they are given a free Lego because we remember the smiles it brought to his. Lego’s allowed him the opportunity to think about something else besides cancer, and that is what we’d like to do for other kiddos.
